The Rotary Club of Melfort presented Habitat for Humanity representatives with a $6,600 cheque on June 17.

On Tuesday, June 17, the Rotary Club of Melfort presented a cheque for $6,600 as a Silver Sponsor of the Habitat for Humanity project in Melfort.
“It fulfilled a local need in the community. Housing is a big issue for people, we want to meet the needs of the community. We want to respond to the needs of the community and Habitat for Humanity has a great reputation and the Rotary has partnered with Habitat for Humanity in other places,” Gailmarie Anderson of the Melfort Rotary Club said.
“Another reason why we chose our part of the project being local was we got so much local support, that was another big reason,” she said.
This represents proceeds from the club’s Farm Project. 2013 was the first year of the renewed Farm Project for Melfort Rotary. Historically, the club ran a farm project from 1992 – 1996 and raised over $30,000 for local and international projects. In 2013, Rotary grew a crop of wheat on 70 acres just north of Melfort on the west side of Highway 6. The net proceeds were $13,200 and on November 25, 2013 a cheque  was presentedfor $6,620 to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.
The Melfort Rotary Club supports the work of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank whose primary goal is to alleviate global hunger around the world. Their objectives are to provide food assistance, food security with sustainable agriculture and improved nutrition. Since their purposes align so closely, The Rotary will continue to support the Canadian Foodgrains Bank with half of the annual proceeds from our Farm Project.
With the other half of the net income, we are committed to supporting worthy local community initiatives. For 2013, we chose to support Habitat for Humanity because of their great contribution to bettering the quality of life for local residents.
Melfort Rotary Club would like to acknowledge all of the donations from our local sponsors. Cervus John Deere was a major contributor to the application process, doing the seeding, spraying and harvesting for us. A&K Enns Trucking provided the transportation and the following donated products and services: CPS, Paragon, Prairie north Co-op, Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer and BASF. We are grateful for their co-operation and support.
The Melfort Rotary is conducting their Farm Project once again this year. For 2014, 70 acres of wheat have been sown and like every farmer, Melfort Rotary is once again hoping for good weather and a great crop.
